I think one implication of “anyone” being able to organize information that my school district has been afraid of is the loss of librarians. I know many districts, mine included, that have at least toyed with the idea of less librarians, or none at all, at many of the campuses. Here the idea of a tight budget has caused many to believe that an assistant can maintain a library. Because of these ideas many school districts have librarians must ensure that they are at the forefront of technology and that they are being active participants in the education of their students as a means of hoping to show their value.
I hope that my Diigo tags are helpful to others. While I am still in a classroom rather than a library I tried to ensure that my tags would work for either occasion. I hope that when I am in a library I am considered a teacher-librarian rather than a book-shelfer and therefore will be able to use many of these websites or ideas with my students. I also hope that the tags my classmates use will provide me with other great resources.
The librarian at my school is very nervous that she could get cut this year. Our district is already making changes because of the budget crisis and many people, including librarians, are worried. I hear that comment all the time about how an assistant could handle the job just fine. I really disagree with that even from a teachers perspective. I agree that there is simply too much information and knowledge that a librarian possesses to hand it over to an inexperienced staffer.
